Panic Bar (Pushbar)

Panic bar is a metal bar mounted on a door to provide quick and safe exit by pushing on the bar. This is a mechanical device and is not dependent on electric power, therefore safe to use in emergency situations when the power may be down.

Panic bars have several names, such as push bar, crash bar, emergency exit bar.

In case of emergency, the long push-bar makes it easy to unlock the door.  All it takes to open a door or a gate is to just push anywhere along the long horizontal bar.

The idea behind the panic bar is to have only one locking device that will open the door with a slight push on the push bar.

Installation Requirements

Panic bar installed should be no less than 36 inches from the floor, and no higher than 42 inches from the floor. This makes sure that any person, including children will be able to open the door with a just slight push anywhere along the panic bar.

Tip: Before panic bar installation, please note:

The door should swing from the inside to the outside.

If the door swings from the outside to the inside – it is the wrong direction. You will need to install the door in the opposite direction.

To make the change in the door direction, it is possible to flip the door frame,  which sometimes would be easier than making new cut-outs for the hinges.

A panic bar can function only if the panic-bars side of the door swings out. The same push that releases the latch also pushes the door out, a one push operation.
