Understanding Your Car’s Immobilizer System

How Your Car’s Immobilizer Works — And Why Keys Cost So Much

If you’ve ever wondered why car keys cost $200+ instead of $5, the answer is your car’s immobilizer system. Here’s how it works and what it means for you.

What Is an Immobilizer?

An immobilizer is an electronic anti-theft system built into your car’s engine management. It prevents the engine from starting unless the correct transponder key is present. Even if someone has a perfectly cut copy of your key, the engine won’t start without the correct electronic chip.

How It Works

  1. You insert the key and turn the ignition (or bring a smart key near the car)
  2. The car’s antenna ring (around the ignition) sends a radio signal to the key’s transponder chip
  3. The chip responds with an encrypted code
  4. The car’s immobilizer ECU compares the code to its stored database
  5. If the code matches, the ECU signals the engine to allow fuel injection and spark
  6. If the code doesn’t match, the engine cranks but won’t start

Types of Immobilizer Systems

Fixed Code (Gen 1 — 1990s)

The transponder sends the same code every time. Vulnerable to cloning. Used in early systems like Ford PATS and Toyota 4C.

Rolling Code (Gen 2 — 2000s)

The code changes with each use. Much harder to clone. Examples: GM PK3+, Toyota 4D, Honda 46/47.

Encrypted/AES (Gen 3 — 2010s+)

Uses AES-128 encryption. Virtually impossible to clone. Examples: Philips HITAG-AES, Megamos AES, Toyota H-chip, Ford DST-AES.

Common Immobilizer Systems by Brand

  • Ford: PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) — 4C, 4D, DST-AES
  • GM: Passlock, PK3+, PK3++ — RCDP, Megamos
  • Toyota/Lexus: 4C, 4D, G-chip, H-chip (AES)
  • Honda/Acura: ID13, ID46, ID47, HITAG-AES
  • Nissan/Infiniti: 4D, 46, ID47
  • BMW: CAS, FEM/BDC — AES encrypted
  • Mercedes: EIS/EZS — infrared and AES
  • Hyundai/Kia: 46, DST-AES, Smart PIN

What Happens When You Lose All Keys?

When all keys are lost, the locksmith must read the immobilizer data directly from the car’s ECU/BCM, generate a new key code, and program a fresh key. This is why “all-keys-lost” is more expensive — it requires advanced diagnostic tools and specialized knowledge.

Frequently Asked Questions

A locksmith doesn’t bypass the immobilizer — they program a new key to the system so the immobilizer recognizes it. The immobilizer continues to protect your vehicle.

Without an existing working key, the locksmith must read the immobilizer ECU directly, generate the key data from scratch, and program a new key — a more complex procedure.

Rarely, but yes. Common issues include damaged antenna rings, corroded key chips, and ECU faults. A locksmith can diagnose and resolve these issues.
